10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU: THE MUSICAL

Submission close: Wednesday, 22 Jul 2026 at 2:00 AM (UTC)Casting: 3 roles

Situated in the shimmering nostalgia of 1999 Padua High School, 10 Things I Hate About You: The Musical is set it to a distinctly modern score inspired by the dance pop and punk rock sounds of the era. The musical lovingly adopts the tone and themes of the original movie, but honours its radical-for-the-time predecessor by aligning with today’s understanding of the world.

10 Things I Hate About You: The Musical is currently in development with a stellar team of creatives. Tony Award winner Christopher Wheeldon (MJ) will direct and choreograph and Mike Bosner (Beautiful, The Jellicle Ball) will produce. Music and lyrics are written by platinum selling recording artist and Broadway alum Carly Rae Jepsen and Grammy winner Ethan Gruska, and the book is by Golden Globe winner Lena Dunham (Girls) and award winning playwright, Jessica Huang.

Casting is underway in the US, but the team are keen to open this to Australian talent too.

Character Breakdown

3 roles

Padua High. Cameron wants beautiful popular Bianca Stratford, who can’t see him because she’s fixated on Himbo Joey. Joey wants Bianca, but she’s not allowed to date... unless, and here’s the big unless, her sister Kat does. Misanthropic, mean, furious Kat: the Sylvia Plath of her high school, the Courtney Love of her home. So Cameron and beleaguered nerd Michael Eckman convince male ditz Joey to pay the resident mysterious weirdo, Patrick Verona to do what no one else dares: try to date her.

KAT

Female Identifying. AAPI. 20s to play high school.

A tough-minded, swerves-the-norm, aspiring songwriter with an acid tongue. Fierce, fast, quick to clap back - but with a surprising charm and vulnerability that she just might

reveal if someone is patient enough to wait it out. Alto with strong rock/pop sensibility and high belt.

General American Accent.

BIANCA

Female identifying. AAPI. 20s to play high school.

Popular, feminine and perfect, the ultimate (over)achiever: gets great grades, is in nine clubs, and manages to be everyone’s best friend. Is unwilling to allow “imperfection”

into her life - like, for example, if she were to allow herself to admit that she’s into girls. Alto/Soprano with strong rock/pop sensibility and high belt.

General American Accent.

PATRICK

Male identifying. Open ethnicity. 20s to play high school.

Is he an extremely cool, socially distant high schooler? Or an international spy whose cover is an extremely cool, socially distant high schooler? A quietly magnetic, mysterious loner who can’t help but be the talk of the school, and always finds himself in detention, whether or not he actually did anything wrong. If anyone actually got to know him, they’d find a wry, charming, goofball with a big heart… but usually he’s cutting class. Bari/tenor with pop sensibility.

General American Accent or Australian Accent, if you prefer.
